Let Life Live…..And Here….Cousins….. From ‘Campaign Against Arms Trade’…

Let Life Live…

Bartholomew Barker wrote a poem about a dog – digging.  He absolutely caught the joy of it….

How to Dig a Hole

Best after a good rain
when the earth is soft
and odors are amplified

Follow your nose to an interesting spot
then loosen the soil with your claws
to get through the top layer of grass

Throw the dirt with your paws
between your legs so your bellycoat
captures souvenirs

Push your snout deep into the world
fill your soul with the essence of life
the very stink of living

Return home and once inside
shake the wet from your fur
leave stains on the carpet

Then wag at your human
as drops to his knees
to worship your work

Bartholomew Barker

Someone responded with comments about poisoning moles in her lawn – which you can read in the ‘comments’ – and my response too – if you’re interested in an exchange between two views of how we humans choose to live with other forms of life.

I presume that this is part of how environmental protection is being eroded since Britain left the EU and safeguards which had been in place  started to be dismantled.

Cousins….

We started to watch the next recorded episode of ‘Quantum Leap’ on our list – it turned out to be the one where Sam ‘leaps’ into a chimpanzee who is going to be sent into space….

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0681185/

I remembered it – vividly.  I remembered the chimp desperately holding onto the bars of a cage as they tried to  drag him away for more ‘tests’.

Holding on – even to a cage –  being preferable to what was going to happen to him.

But the humans just pulled him away – forced him to let go.

‘Do as you would be done by’.

I realised that I didn’t want to watch this episode again – so we didn’t.

I also remembered thinking, at the time, that one of the main points in this episode is ….that Sam leapt into a chimp.  He doesn’t leap into dogs, horses or other intelligent forms of life  – he leaps into humans.  Yet – he leapt into a chimp.

I rest my case.

From Campaign Against Arms Trade…

Online Film Launch Event:  "Arms Sales to Dictators, Displacement, and Militarised Borders"

Join London Campaign Against Arms Trade for a launch of their new film on the UK government and the UK arms industry’s involvement in and around the Syrian Civil war.

Venue: Online,

Date: Monday 24th April

Time: 18:30-20:00

The film critically tracks the UK government’s issuing of chemical licences to companies selling to Bashar al Assad, who would go on to gas Syrians. It then examines arms sales to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whose border guards shoot at and kill Syrians trying to flee and is accused of ethnic cleansing of the Kurdish population. Finally, it looks at how the UK choses to support a policy of militarised borders in Lebanon and Jordan which has made it even harder for Syrians to escape.

We will show the film and then have a panel of speakers (tbc) who will talk about the issues raised in the film. There will be time for questions.
