Thinking Too Much….. Patterns of Extraction…… Eh?...

Thinking Too Much…..

In his blog…https://bartbarkerpoet.com/  Bartholomew Barker wrote….

“I'm proud to announce that my poem I Think Too Much is featured at Ephemeral Elegies. Hop on over and check it out.

Thank you, Tiffany Renee Harmon, for posting my work.”

I thought - my lord – that strikes a chord – thinking too much – how often do I advise people  ‘Think less – Feel more’.  Do I take my own advice?  Who does?

Then I had a look at Bart’s poem…..

I Think Too Much by Bartholomew Barker

It was a good thing at school

or the office where I'm paid

to sit still and think

for eight hours a day

but it's a problem

the rest of the time

Does she want to be more than friends?

Why hasn't she texted me back?

Am I being too clingy?

Like a vaudeville plate spinning act

my thoughts spiral to desperation

I should learn to trust my instincts

I'm a moth and she's the flame

I just have to accept the singed wings

Which brought to mind ‘Living On Borrowed Time’ by John Lennon…..especially the end bit….

When I was younger, uh huh
Living confusion and deep despair
When I was younger, uh huh
Living illusion of freedom and power
When I was younger
Full of ideals and broken dreams, my friend
When I was younger, uh huh
Everything simple but not so clear

[Chorus]
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

[Verse 2]

Now I am older
The more that I see, the less that I know for sure
Now I am older, uh huh
The future is brighter and now is the hour

[Chorus]

Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

[Verse 3]

Good to be older
Would not exchange a single day or a year
Good to be older, uh huh (You bet)
Less complication, everything clear

[Chorus]

Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

[Outro]

Oh yes
It all seemed so bloody easy then
You know like
What to wear very serious like you know
How am I gonna get rid of the pimples
Does she really love me
All that crap
But now I don't bother about that shit no more
I know she loves me
All I gotta bother about is standing up
Alright you can get out of there.

From ‘Emergence’ on-line magazine….

Patterns of Extraction

by Edward Burtynsky

"In North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the colossal open-pit Garzweiler II coal mine is set to devour the village of Lützerath now that protesters have been cleared from the area, playing out a tension at the heart of both our civilization and the works of photographer Edward Burtynsky: at what cost do we consume the things we need and desire? Through his images, Burtynsky—who photographed the mined landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2015—brings into focus the disturbances our industrialized world has wreaked upon places we rarely see yet blindly rely upon for their natural resources.

In his latest series of photographs, Burtynsky reveals sites of displacement, erasure, and extraction—all, at first glance, sublime—across five African countries. From the breathtaking expanse of the Sishen Iron Ore Mine to the controlled might of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a story of reshaped and redefined landscapes emerges. Burtynsky makes visible the scope of human impact in sub-Saharan Africa, inviting viewers to digest vistas of both beauty and destruction, and to witness the marks, physical and abstract, that we set into the Earth."

I first read the title as being ‘Patterns of Extinction’ – seriously, I did.  The eye experiences Freudian slips, as well as the tongue.
