Why Cats Don’t Like Christmas…..

A cat-lover of my acquaintance asked for a list of why cats don’t like Christmas.  I think it’s because of…

The noise, the fuss, the general kerfuffle and all the other very ‘human’ goings-on which cats look upon with some distain.

Here’s a short tale of cats & Christmas….

I used to  have a set of baubles for the Christmas tree, each one wrapped in silk thread. The first year I hung them on the tree my two cats, Souxie and Ali,  took absolutely no notice of them, or the tree.  Didn’t give them so much as a glance, all day.

I went to bed – came down next morning to find that the tree was down - the baubles mostly taken off - the ones with silk thread wrapped round them, unwrapped.

There was just one of the silk-wrapped ones left, which we still have and which still goes on the ‘tree’ – though, these days, we use a willow obelisk so’s not to kill tress unnecessarily.

I have a photo of Souxie, from another Christmas, staring at the Christmas tree – assessing……

I didn’t give them a chance to have a go at that one – they were shut in the kitchen at night!

Urban Pre-history……

I hope that Kenny Brophy doesn’t mind my quoting him, but it’s a good way to indicate what his blog post is about -

“There is nothing at Kylepark today that would make one know that this had been a place of death, rites, subsistence and salmon abundance. Just another sandstone suburb on the fringe of Glasgow.”….. https://theurbanprehistorian.wordpress.com/2022/12/23/under-uddingston/

Recently, our neighbour heard that there is a potential broch site just down the road from us which we hadn’t known about but are very interested in. When I looked it up on Canmore sure enough - there it is….   https://canmore.org.uk/site/2425/north-aittit

It now has a house built on it – right slap bang on top of it.

What might be under your house?

Aye - it’s the time of year for it - I’m thinking Hoy sunsets.

The Night Before Christmas.....

I wrote this some years ago for a Grinch of my aquaintence….

'Twas the night before Christmas
'Twas Christmas Eve
Not a creature was stirring
Not even our Steev
He was crouched in a corner
Snarling and growling
The rain it was driving
The wind it was howling.
"Blow this for a lark"
Grumbled The Grinch
"I'm frozen and miserable and feeling the pinch"
Then out of the air
Came an angel so bright
Saying "Cheer up, you old bugger,
Soon you'll be right -
You'll be playing your geetar
Surrounded by Bluebells
With Spring in the air
And the ringing of newbells"
But Steev wouldn't listen
The grouchy old scrote
"I'll get off this island
I'm off on a boat
Or a plane or a train
Or a moped will do
And as for your Christmas
Two fingers to you!"

Holly The Awesome Orca……

Did you know that one whale carcass can feed a polar bear for a year? Even after death, whales sustain life.….  https://uk.whales.org/2022/11/22/what-have-dead-whales-ever-done-for-us/

They have provided oil and meat for light and food, and bone for roofing, tools and ornament for humans for millennia….

Once again, I reference Star Trek  ‘The Voyage Home’….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOhoIBkOYf0
