A Very Real Christmas Gift….
I received the following email from ‘Freedom From Torture’….
I must admit I don’t see the point of some of the things in the boxes – but I presume that the people at Freedom from Torture have worked out what will most benefit the recipients. Maybe pens & notebook to express how they feel? And it might just feel good to have something which isn’t purely practical for a change.
A concrete, actual gift for people in a bad situation – we’re getting one of each of the Christmas Care box and Mother and Baby box…..
“Bernie, the government is clearly trying to make this the harshest winter yet for refugees and torture survivors.
Tiny living allowances, spiralling costs and endless scapegoating in the media are piling pressure on people trying to build new lives after horrific trauma, often alone in an unfamiliar country.
At times like this, simply knowing others stand with you can be a huge lift. Do that for a torture survivor now by buying one of our Christmas care boxes. Just choose one from our online shop and it’ll be sent directly to a torture survivor.
Certain politicians are hell bent on making our country inhospitable to torture survivors. But, Bernie, we don’t have to accept that. Buy a torture survivor one of our Christmas care boxes now, and show them they belong here.
I’d love you to see the face of someone who has survived torture when they receive a pack. First they feel the box in their hands, see the ribbons, and then carefully open the parcel to find the useful supplies inside. It’s a truly special moment.
After years of trauma, it means everything for a kind stranger to welcome them in this way. Whether it’s desperately needed hats and gloves, children’s toys, or something else the gift will have a value well beyond the price tag.
