Books….
I was thinking – I know three people who are writing books.
Closest to home, Andrew Appleby is working on the fifth of his ‘Skara’ series. I wrote this after reading ‘Skara Four’… https://theorkneynews.scot/2020/08/02/skara-the-fourth-wave/ and have been wondering what has become of Oiwa, Shala, their family and their world.
Then there’s an old friend from college - Julian de la Motte-Harrison, who writes historical novels under the name of Julian de la Motte -

Julian has an interesting history himself – he’s a descendant of the Countess de la Motte who fled the French Revolution taking with her, presumably among other more practical things, a thorn from the Crown of Thorns ( allegedly).
And there’s Ian Marchant. Ian is undergoing treatment for cancer, which delayed work on his book for a time. Best if Ian tells the tale himself…. https://ianmarchant.com/2022/10/ians-facup-challenge-3rd-qualifying-round-report/
If anyone would like to sponsor the Marchant Macmillan Pie Appeal – please do!

I don’t know what Ian’s next book is about – probably about people and the life around him – that tends to be what he looks at. Two good examples of this are ’The Longest Crawl’ and ‘A Hero For High Times’ – both of which are ’a good read’.
So, three people I know are writing books….I’m reading them…..Tove Jansson’s ‘ Moomin’ books – soothing for these times. https://tovejansson.com/

OAS Gets Christmassy….
And we got this email from them…
“We have set up a Christmas page in our online shop to tempt you with some of our items, either for yourself or to buy as gifts for family or friends.
There are other items in the shop of course, but we selected a few special ones that we hope will be of interest. As you know there are things like postal strikes looming so please don’t leave it too late if you want to order anything. And if you are overseas you will need to select “standard” post as economy is way past the last posting date to be sure it would reach you in time for Christmas. Do have a look at what we have in the shop – just go to : https://shop.orkneyarchaeologysociety.org.uk/christmas/
You could, of course, give OAS Membership as a gift – quite a few of you did that last year and I know it was appreciated.
All the best”
