Around The Bay…..

I previously included a very informative item from the Ness of Brodgar blog in one of my blog posts…..

And now there is a follow up about the settlement on Wideford Hill – I’ll leave it to Sigurd to tell the tale…..

Unusual Interpretations….

We watched a film – ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ directed by Armando Iannucci…. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6439020/

It was OK – an easy thing to watch on a Saturday evening, but it played a wee bit fast and loose with the actual story.  I accept that films often do that  - when I first saw the ’Lord of the Rings’ films I was furious!

I was pleased that at the end the credits said ‘Based on a novel by Charles Dickens.’  Fair enough.

But it reminded me of how original works can be mis-represented in films or television adaptations.

Mike was in Rochester some years ago – a town which could be labelled ‘Great Expectations-Land’  and he saw a bridal-wear shop called ‘Miss Haversham’s' – someone didn’t do their research – someone really didn’t do their research! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Havisham

At a bit of a tangent  - I was then thinking about the room that Miss Haversham was festering in, which, in David Lean's 1946 film adaptation was full of cobwebs. I was thinking – our house is full of spiders, and their cobwebs, which I don’t mind – but they do shit on things – ruined a pair of suede shoes…

Wellies Slippers & Crocs

Wellies Slippers & Crocs,

That’s what I wear on my feet these days.

I go for walks, am in the garden, and in the house.

The rest of my shoes gather dust in the wardrobe

Dust – and spider shit.

I didn’t know that spiders - shit.

My shoes usually get worn more often.

But they do, of course they do -

Shit, that is.

To quote a lady from Shetland I met on my way back from hospital in Inverness…

“You got to eat – if you don’t eat – you don’t shit – and if you don’t shit – you die.”

So, I wear Wellies Slippers and Crocs

And……check my shoes for spider shit!

That room of Miss Haversham’s must have been knee-deep in spider shit too.

Maybe I dwell too much on practicalities.
