Jerry Lee….
Jerry Lee Lewis died on Friday – what is there to say? I’d say “RIP Jerry Lee” - but I doubt that he’d want to – more likely to let rip than RIP!
He was one of the originals – lived a heeluva life – here he is….

A Spectacular Slime Mould….
Mike was clearing round the trees in our garden preparatory to strimming when he saw this on the trunk of an Alder…
What a fine beast - very much the stuff that horror movies are made of…….
Someone sees it - pays no attention – it gets bigger and bigger - spreads and spreads – engulfs the tree - then engulfs….everything!
This one has a little friend…..
…we don’t know what that one is….another kind of Slime Mould?
Am I the only one who sees the face in the tree bark?
Mike’s science bit….
“Slime Moulds (myxomycetes) are not fungi, but are composed of amoeba-like units.
There are two groups of Slime Moulds (only distantly related)…
Cellular Slime Moulds, effectively a colony of amoeba-like cells which moves together as a combined unit.
Acellular Slime Moulds in which the cell nucleus divides and multiplies but without forming separate cells. The whole Slime Mould is effectively one giant cell (plasmodium).
It is the acellular Slime Moulds that are often studied in laboratories for maze-solving etc.
The one on the trunk of our Alder is acellular – probably the same as the kind used in labs – Physarum polycephalum
The ones we often see in the grass are ( I think!) cellular Slime Moulds.”
I have a liking for/fascination with Slime Moulds – they’re just so…straaaaange. https://theorkneynews.scot/?s=Slime+Moulds
