It’s National Poetry Day…….https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/national-poetry-day-2022/.  I like the idea of a circle poem, and thought I’d try to write one.  Here it is – but I don’t know how to make it go in an actual circle…..

It's Circular

We produce

We consume

We discard

We produce

We consume

We discard…

I’m remembering a rhyme from when I was a child….

It was a dark and stormy night

Two sailors sat in a boat

Anthony said to Antonio

Tell us a tale

And this is the tale he told

The Royal Mail No More….

I read this…..

Here’s a tale…….

I have an elderly friend who had a go at word processing on a computer but simply couldn’t manage the tech.   So we write to each other, by hand, about once a week.  She used to live out in the countryside but due to increasing infirmity now lives in a small flat right in town.  So, in my letters I tell her about and send her pictures of plants, birds - what’s going on around me. She says she looks forward to my letters – they’re usually in a big envelops so’s the pictures don’t get folded.  She told me that, just before  she received last week’s letter she’d been feeling very down – cold, kept in by the weather,  not knowing what do with herself.  Then the big, fat envelope arrived, she made herself a cup of tea and pored over the contents.  She keeps them, and re-reads them too.

That’s just one of the reasons that the Post Office (I still prefer to call it that) as a public institution matters, and why hand-written letters still matter too.  The phone is no use as she’s quite deaf.

This change to the Royal Mail is another example of ‘business’ coming before people.

Anthony Trollope saw how the Post brings people together… https://trollopesociety.org/trollope/post-office-career/pillar-boxes/.  What would he make of this ‘development’?
