‘The Secret Life Of Waves’…

We watched a recorded television programme – ‘The Secret Life of Waves’  - it’s very good – I couldn’t find the whole programme to put a link to  - this is the nearest I could find…. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00y5jhx

David Malone & Co explain how even the biggest wave starts with a little bubble. And I was thinking …..not just in water, but in life.  Even the smallest action causes re-action – ripples and waves flowing out into the world around us.

Waves – everywhere - waves we can see and be aware of, and those which aren’t so obvious……

The programme also discusses process and how objects may appear to be immutable. A discussion I’ve had a number of time with folk - one man I had this discussion with - though he was polite -  I could tell he thought I was nuts!  My argument is……a table may be a table now, but what has its constituent parts been previously?   And what will they be?  Same with a human body – what has its constituent parts been – including stardust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLPkpBN6bEI&t=92s – and what will they be?

Makes yer’ think, don’t it?

Thinking of mutability - Tuesday evening – a knock on the door - our neighbour had been fishing on Kirbister Loch and brought round a trout for us – fresh from the water!  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – what it is to have good neighbours.

We were waxing lyrical about the nice plump little trout -- how the sun will have shone on Kirbister Loch, to be absorbed by the plant life. Bugs fed on the plant life – the fish ate the bugs - Mike ate the fish – taking the sun’s energy into his flesh.

I don’t eat trout as I prefer white fish – Cod, Haddock and Plaice, but Mike was very pleased and had the trout with twice-baked home-grown tatties and broccoli for his tea.  The tatties & veg were enough for me!

Twice baked Tatties - we’d had baked tatties the night before and had some left over, so – here’s a rarity …a recipe on m’blog….

2 baking potatoes

½ oz of butter or marge

1 clove garlic, chopped

½ a green pepper chopped

4 oz mushrooms

4 oz cheddar – grated

½ tsp mustard

1 tblsp low fat yogurt

Ground black pepper

Bacon or pretend bacon….. https://theorkneynews.scot/2022/05/31/in-praise-of-bacon-butties/

Heat oven to 190°C.  If you’re starting from scratch with the potatoes - wash and prick with a fork and bake for 1 hour 15 mins. to start with.

If you’ve got baked tatties left over you can just go ahead …melt marge in a pan over a gentle heat.  Add garlic, green pepper and bits of bacon/pretend bacon.  Cook for a few minutes.  Add mushrooms and cook until just tender. Remove from heat.

Cut baked pots in half and scoop out flesh into a bowl.  Mash loosely with a fork and add the cooked veg mixture, half the cheese, mustard, yogurt and black pepper and mix thoroughly.

Spoon mixture back into the potato skins, sprinkle with remaining cheese and return pots. to the oven.  Bake at 220°C for about 20 minutes until cheese is golden.

Serve with a green veg. which can cook while the pots. are in the oven the second time.

It’s yum.

When I was young I had a friend.  We were at Nursery together ( both our mothers worked), then Primary School, then Secondary School.  She left after doing her ‘O’ levels, while I stayed on to do ‘A’ levels. We didn’t see so much of each other, and that’s when she changed.

I don’t know if it was because she got to know a different group of people - but she changed.  She became racist – or rather, specifically prejudiced again what she referred to as ‘wogs’.  It will make folk wince to read that word, but that’s the word she took to using.  She said she’d like to “Kick a wog out of Bradford.”  That she’d  “Like to get a wog and kick him and kick him until he was out of Bradford.”

So, she wasn’t just against the Indian and Pakistani people around her, she was vicious about it - wanting to hurt them.  And yet – her parents were Irish immigrants, so if this hatred  was the usual ‘coming here taking our jobs’ business, then it didn’t hold water, as her parents could have been said to have done just that.

That there was a need for them to come to Britain, as there was a need for other immigrants after the war, seems to have got lost somewhere in the hysteria against incomers.

And yet it’s something we’ve been doing for thousands of years, we humans, moving around on the surface of the earth, settling, mixing – and pushing others out of their homelands so they have to move….. https://theorkneynews.scot/2021/11/25/no-one-would-leave-home-unless-home-chased-you-to-the-shore/

If my former friend is still around - and I presume she is as we’re the same age - unless she’s had  another change of heart she’ll be one of those cheering on the deportation of migrants to Rwanda.

And I’ll point out, yet again, that Priti Patel, who thought up this plan, is the child of immigrants herself.

What is wrong with us?  Why do we treat each other this way?
