The School
1800s - John MacGillivary (born 1799), Headteacher of Culloden School with his wife Mary.
John MacGillivary was the Head Teacher and occupier of the School House from 1828 to 1874. He died at age 92 in 1891. An extract from his obituary reads, '..a vacancy occurring in the school at Culloden, he offered his services as Teacher. The successful candidate required to pass an examination at Edinburgh, and thither, accordingly, he went, performing the journey there and back on foot. He left Edinburgh on the return journey on the Tuesday morning and arrived back in Inverness on the Thursday evening, having walked fifty miles the last day. He carried in his pocket a sealed letter approving of his appointment, and he attributed the rapid journey northward to his anxiety to learn whether the letter he carried was favourable or otherwise.'
