NIAMEY, Feb 19, 2010 (AFP) - A coup in Niger is the latest in a long line of military takeovers in Africa. The following is a list of the most recent:


-- April 9, 1999 - NIGER: Ibrahim Bare Mainassara is killed by members of the presidential guard, led by Daouda Mallam Wanke.

-- April 30, 1999 - COMOROS: The army led by Colonel Azali Assoumani takes power.

-- May 7, 1999 - GUINEA-BISSAU: Joao Bernardo Vieira is overthrown by soldiers led by General Ansumane Mane.

-- Dec 24, 1999 - IVORY COAST: A country reputed for its stability suffers its first coup, when army leader General Robert Guei takes over. He is ousted by a popular uprising a year later.

-- March 15, 2003 - CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: Ange-Felix Patasse, in power since 1993, is overthrown by General Francois Bozize.

-- July 16, 2003 - SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE: President Fradique de Menezes is overthrown while out of the country. Following international mediation he is reinstated a week later.

-- Sept 14, 2003 - GUINEA-BISSAU: The regime of Kumba Yala is ousted by General Verissimo Correia Seabra, who is killed a year later during new violence.

-- August 3, 2005 - MAURITANIA: The regime is overthrown in a bloodless coup. The new rulers promise elections, which take place a year later.

-- August 6, 2008 - MAURITANIA: The first democratically elected president, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, is overthrown after only 15 months in power.

-- December 23, 2008: GUINEA: Soldiers seize power following the death of longtime ruler Lansana Conte.

-- March 2, 2009: GUINEA-BISSAU: President Joao Bernardo Vieira is killed by soldiers in Bissau in apparent revenge for the death of army chief General Batista Tagme Na Waie, who was killed in a bomb attack just hours earlier.

-- March 17,2009 - MADAGASCAR: Andry Rajoelina seizes power from then president Marc Ravalomanana with the backing of the military.

- February 18, 2010 - NIGER: A military junta dissolves the government after a coup that toppled President Mamadou Tandja.
