Despite the recent bad weather and the subsequent disruption to many school activities, staff, pupils, parents and helpers pulled together one of the most successful events in the school calendar year, the annual primary school’s country dancing competition. Nine schools in the area contributed to an event that, first and foremost, is a celebration of Highland life and culture and secondly a competition for coveted trophies rewarding excellence in dancing a range of ceilidh dances at a packed Brora Primary School hall.

Pictured are the eventual winners in action, Dornoch Primary School, but their overall lead was a close run thing against the runners up, Edderton, who also managed to secure trophies for the Eightsome Reel and for being the best turned out and presented team. The Strip the Willow trophy was won by Brora, who came third overall, while Helmsdale and Lairg had some notable highest scores for individual dances. Cllr Deirdre Mackay presented the awards and was delighted with the standard and enthusiasm of all the dancers.
The annual schools dance competition has traditionally been able to raise funds to support local school sports throughout the year, but this year, £307 raised in the raffle has been banked for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The organisers would like to thank all those who made contributions as well as all those children and adults who helped to make the evening such a success.
