The club was first constituted on 9 November 1861.  It has had to be revived on four occasions in 1889, 1910, 1919 and 1948.  It's first external opponent was Inverness Railway Club in 1889.  In 1893 the club was amongst the founding members of the Camanachd Association.

By the 1970s the club was amongst the most exciting shinty teams in the country.  It would go on to win the Sutherland Cup on two occasions and the Strathdearn Cup once.  However, more impressively, the club were only prevented reaching the MacGillivray Senior League Final in 1974-75 by losing a play-off.

Two further Strathdearn successes followed in the late 1970s along with Sutherland Cup wins in 1994 and 2005.  The club competed at senior level for seasons 2006 and 2007 before returning to North Divison 3 for season 2008.

The club celebrated their 150th season birthday by winning North Division 3 in season 2011.
