"Andrew de Candole was brought up at Bateman's in Sussex - Rudyard Kipling's house, famous for its beautiful old gardens - and was, from an early age, a passionate gardener. In 1992, he bought Groombridge Place in Kent, a seventeenth-century house set inside a medieval moat described by Sir Arthur Conran Doyle as 'still and luminous as quicksilver'. Andrew set about restoring the gardens, which featured The Draughtman's Contract, and to celebrate he held a dance dubbed 'Rock around the Moat'; the proceeds of which went to the Terence Higgins Trust. Despite torrential rain, the Dunkirk spirit prevailed and hardcore revellers in period costume were rewarded when the downpour obligingly called a halt in time for the firework display."
The Tatler, 16 Septembr 1994
