A HAPPY EASTER

Remember the reason for the season

Palm Sunday (14th April) commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion when he was made to wear a crown of thorns on Good Friday (19th April - today). It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday, the day of his crucifixion.  The resurrection is a day to rejoice - hence we say Happy Easter.

Easter Eggs

The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus' emergence from the tomb and resurrection. ... Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions.

What determines when Easter is each year?

The Eastern Christian churches still determine the Easter dates using the older Julian Calendar* method. The usual statement, that Easter Day is the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs next after the vernal equinox, is not a precise statement of the actual ecclesiastical rules.

* The Julian calendar, proposed by Julius Caesar in 46 BC (708 AUC), was a reform of the Roman calendar. It took effect on 1 January 45 BC (709 AUC), by edict.
