Film Club Resurrection!
Dear Film Club Chums, well I was gratified, to say the least, by the incredible positive responses that I got after my email sounding out members for a possible revival of the Film Club, thanks to all of you who took the time to write, feelin’ the love! So, here we go again!
Get these dates in your diary now:
Friday 19th January 2024: Happy As Lazzaro (Lazzaro Felice). Set in Italy this is the tale of a meeting between Lazzaro, a young peasant, so good that he is often mistaken for simple-minded, and Tancredi, a young nobleman cursed by his imagination. The film came out to rave reviews in 2019 and promptly vanished during the pandemic so this is a great chance to see a rarely viewed film and a great way to restart the Film Club.
Friday 16th February: Drive My Car. A haunting road movie set in Japan. 2 years after his wife’s sudden death a renowned stage actor and director travels to Hiroshima to direct a production of Uncle Vanya. Assigned a chauffeur for insurance purposes he meets the taciturn young woman who will be driving his beloved classic car. Together they confront painful truths from their past. Winner of the 2021 Academy Award for best foreign feature film.
Friday 15th March: Limbo: a wry and poignant observation of the refugee experience, set on a fictional remote Scottish island where a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. It centres on Omar, a young Syrian musician who is burdened by his grandfather's oud, which he has carried all the way from his homeland. Droll deadpan humour, terrific performances and a humanistic vision combine to make this unmissable comedy drama.
All screenings will be at the Parish Church hall which is almost opposite the Victoria Hall in High Street, Selkirk TD7 4JX. Doors will open at 7.00pm and the film will start about 7.30pm. Ah cannae wait! A’ the best, Al
