FILM & FOOD In conjunction with The County Hotel               22.11.13 BABETTE'S FEAST(Babettes Gæstebud): 1987 Gabriel Axel Drama Romance 102 mins U
Oscar winning adaptation of Isak Dinesen’s story of a 19th-century French cook who spends her lottery winnings on a banquet for the ageing Danish sisters who sheltered her. Impeccably mounted and played, this is gastro-cinema at its most sensual and intoxicating.

13.12.13    THE LAST WALTZ: Martin Scorsese 1977 Documentary/Music  117 mins 15
Thanksgiving, 1976, San Francisco's Winterland: the Band performs its last concert after 16 years on the road. Some numbers they do alone, some songs include guest artists from Ronnie Hawkins (their first boss, when they were the Hawks) to Bob Dylan (their last, when as his backing band and as a solo group, they came into their own). Scorsese's camera explores the interactions onstage in the making of music. Offstage, he interviews the Band's five members, focusing on the nature of life on the road. The friendships, the harmonies, the hijinks, and the wear and tear add up to a last waltz.

17.1.14    CHINATOWN: 1974 Roman Polanski Crime/Drama 130 mins 15
This remastered print has Jack Nicholson playing a private detective in 1930s Los Angeles, uncovering political corruption and dark and dirty family secrets. As one character ominously says, "you may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't".

21.2.14    KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN: 1985 Hector Babenco Drama 120 mins 15
Luis Molina and Valentin Arregui are cell mates in a South American prison. Luis, a homosexual, is found guilty of immoral behaviour and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. During the time they spend together, the two men come to understand and respect one another.

21.3.14    MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING: 2013 Joss Whedon, Drama/Comedy, 104 mins 12A b&w
Joss Whedon, better known for popular TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer makes a respectful, respected version of Shakespeare's comedy about two pairs of lovers with a different take on romance and a way with words.
