Singles League March Report
22 April 2010

March was to be the busiest month yet with seventy-five games scheduled to be played. Unfortunately due to a couple of players making themselves unavailable, only sixty-six games were actually played. At this stage of the season, with everyone having found their level in the leagues, there were a lot of very close games with eight finishing 9-8 and another eight ending 9-7. There were thirty 180’s scored by a new record of nineteen players with Ray Butcher, Stevie Linklater and Martin Peace all recording the most with three each. There were also twenty-nine ton-plus checkouts scored by seventeen different players with Lee ‘The Phantom’ MacPherson being the top checkout man with 117, 110, 108 and 104 to finish with four. Robbie Stanger recorded the highest checkout of the month with a 127 against Bruce Moar but unfortunately it didn’t do Robbie much good as he went down 9-2!! Susie Bain joined the League for the first time last month and wasted no time in recording her first whitewash with the 9-0 slaughter of Alex Partner. The only other whitewash came from Colin Findlay against Mike Lucas, the third time Colin’s achieved it and his second one against Mike.
Stevie Linklater finished at the top of League 1 for the sixth month in a row although both Iain Wilkie and Bruce Moar pushed him all the way in their games before Stevie eventually beat them both 9-8. Stevie won both his other games to finish with maximum points for the fifth time this season. Iain Wilkie took this month’s runner-up spot beating Robbie Stanger on leg difference. Bruce Moar makes the drop to League 2 for the first time this season after suffering two close 9-8 defeats, one of which was at the hands of Davy Cooper who also joins Bruce in League 2.
With Brian Moar and Leigh Shearer both level with three wins apiece in March, the battle to see who won League 2 went right to the end of the month with Brian coming out on top with a good 9-6 win over Leigh. Both players now move up to League 1 in April. Lee MacPherson lost to the top two but beat Derek Farmer and Robert Gatt to retain his place in League 2. At the bottom Robert Gatt avenged his previous month’s defeat to Derek Farmer with an excellent 9-4 victory but it wasn’t enough to stop both men slipping down to League 3.
In League 3 Martin Peace comfortably finished at the top with maximum points although he was made to work for it in his 9-8 win over Neil Tait. Neil Tait finished in second with two wins and moves up to League 2 for the first time this season. Ali Flett only managed to play three of his games, winning two to finish third and has since withdrawn from the League. At the bottom James Flett narrowly lost 9-7 to both Martin and Ali but beat Neil Twatt to finish second bottom. Unfortunately for the third time in five months Neil Twatt didn’t manage to get all his games played, losing the three he did and is therefore relegated to League 4 alongside James.
League 4 had six players in March and was disrupted slightly with Aaron Moar not managing to play four of his games. Aaron has since been ‘retired’ from the League! Michael Bain, playing his first month in the league, made an immediate impact winning all his games to gain promotion to League 3 at the first attempt. A welcome return to form for Craig Moar sees him join Michael after winning all but one of his matches. Ali Flett’s withdrawal made an extra promotion place available and Ray Butcher secured it with an end of the month 9-7 victory over Colin Ross who retains his place in League 4. At the bottom Linda Ratter slips back down to League 5. Although Linda lost all her games she had some close games including giving League 4 winner Michael Bain his toughest match before she narrowly lost 9-8.
In League 5 Cammy Scott hit form at the right time and comfortably won all five matches to ease himself back into League 4 in April. Joining Cammy is Sean Chalmers after he won three of his five matches, just beating Linda Harcus by virtue of a better leg difference, Linda remains in League 5. Craig Rendall finished fourth with two wins and has since withdrawn from the League to concentrate on his football commitments. At the bottom Paul Davis and Stewart Moar both finished with one win each and slip down to the bottom league, Paul, who beat Stewart in their respective match 9-6, just pipping Stewart on leg difference.
Fixtures in League 6 were affected by the early withdrawal of Garry Leisk with injury however it still proved to be a very close League. Colin Findlay, Noreen Bain and Susie Bain all finished with four wins apiece and with several withdrawals higher in the leagues it meant that all three win promotion. Colin topped the League with the best leg difference followed by Noreen who firmly put her daughter in law Susie in place with a sound 9-4 thrashing! At the bottom Mike Lucas once again beat Alex Partner to leave Alex still looking for his first win.
There were 30 x 180’s scored by; Ray Butcher 3, Stevie Linklater 3, Martin Peace 3, Robbie Stanger 2, Leigh Shearer 2, Lee MacPherson 2, James Flett 2, Craig Rendall 2, Iain Wilkie, Bruce Moar, Neil Tait, Robert Gatt, Craig Moar, Paul Davis, Linda Ratter, Colin Findlay, Colin Ross, Michael Bain and Sean Chalmers. There was also 29 ton plus checkouts from 17 different players. They came from Lee MacPherson 117, 110, 108 & 104, Robbie Stanger 127, 110 & 102, Derek Farmer 116, 106 & 104, Bruce Moar 123 & 102, Brian Moar 117 & 102, Craig Moar 116 & 110, Stevie Linklater 2 x 114, Colin Findlay 104 & 101, Davy Cooper 117, Iain Wilkie 114, Cammy Scott 114, Martin Peace 111, Leigh Shearer 110, Ray Butcher 107, Robert Gatt 105 and Michael and Susie Bain had his and hers 100 checkouts!
