Action - not words

What is being done when the council don't listen

We give two examples below - then ask questions

The Gnoll Action Group was formed by local residents concerned about litter, vandalism and the general state of disrepair (through lack of maintenance) in the Gnoll grounds, Neath, south Wales. The Gnoll grounds include the Gnoll Country Park and the War Memorial Gardens.

For many years, members had been raising issues with their local councillors and council officers, but found that as individuals, their concerns were being ignored. So the Gnoll Action Group was formed, in order to make their voices heard. The Gnoll Action Group has now become an established organisation, holding monthly meetings to decide where to concentrate their efforts.

The Bryncoch Environmental Group was formed when a group of individuals in South Bryncoch were unhappy with the area they live in.   Their litter picking groups regularly pick up rubbish dropped by thoughtless people.

Our First Question:  Should groups like these be funded by the council - and not be taken advantage of?

More details about these groups:

MORE QUESTIONS:  We would like readers comments on this subject.

  • Should more of this sort of thing be done, if so, how should it be funded?
  • How can these groups co-ordinate with council officials?
  • Could this lead to the reduction in councillors, which would help to fund such schemes?
  • What are the pros and cons of such schemes?
