Initial Proposals for Parliamentary Constituencies

Consultation Open until 4 April  

This is a reminder that contributions are still welcome from anyone interested in commenting on the
Boundary Commission for Wales’ initial proposals for a revised Parliamentary constituency map of
Wales. The Commission’s initial 12 week consultation period will be open until 4 April for written
responses to be received.

The initial proposals, published on 11 January 2012, meet the requirements of the Parliamentary
Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011. Compliance with the legislation means a reduction in the
number of Parliamentary constituencies in Wales from 40 to 30 and that all constituencies have to
have a more equal number of electors (within 5% of the UK electoral quota of 76,641).

Ben Whitestone, Secretary to the Commission, said today: “When the Commission launched its
proposals in January it was the start of the process and not the end. It is very clear from our
consultation so far that the people who have the best understanding of local areas and communities in
Wales are those who live and work there. The consultation is still open and we hope that people will
write to us and let use know what they think, whether in support of or in objection to our proposals,
and particularly if they have any counter-proposals. The Commission will consider changes to its
proposals as a result”.

Later this year the Commission will publish all of the responses received for a further consultation
period where individuals and organisations will be able to comment on the responses that others have
made.

The proposals are available to view on the Commission’s website www.bcomm-wales.gov.uk or at 50
public locations across Wales.
