Flying Pigs!

Pigs to fly over Neath?

There is more chance of pigs flying over Neath (population around 47,000**) than the town having its own community station for its mature residents - or so it seems.

Clive Saddington of Mumbles Radio has been trying to get a FM broadcasting licence from OFCOM since 2009 and was told in April 2011 that this is not possible.  It appears that Mumbles radio have to be satisfied for the time being with the MW and live Internet broadcasting.

Apart from this, we have to be honest and say that there is more interest in that neck of the woods in community broadcasting than what appears here in Neath - we hope we are wrong.
At least, Mumbles, with a reported population of 4,314, have got something in the way of community broadcasting - Neath, with a population of 47,020, has got nothing for its mature residents!

According to the Mumbles Radio website there are now over 200 community radio stations in the UK.

** Compare with Tircoed Forest Village (Nr. Swansea) who have their own community radio station with a population of less than 2,000.   They have their own FM frequency and can be heard live on the Internet.

INTERNET RADIO

Internet radio does not need a licence from OFCOM - but other licences are neccessary. See our report on Internet Radio
