Dorothy
was the wife of Ernest, the younger son of Violet's husband Gerard, i.e. she was Gerard's sister-in-law.
Her tale is tragic - the oral tradition is that, during the First world War, she took it upon herself to distribute white feathers to anyone whom she considered to be a coward. One day, she handed one to someone in The Mall.
This particular person - so the story goes - was in mufti, but had just been to Buckingham Palace to receive a bravery award. He was accompanied by his mother, who had already losy other sons to the War, and the mother cursed Dorthy at some length. This turned Dorothy's mind; she was never the same again, and spent much of the rest of her life in a home.
