Home Cine Films

One wedding present to Betty and her husband was a 16mm cine camera, that Betty used - I don't think her husband ever used it.  Most is Black & White; colour film stock WAS available, but very expensive.

Once the film had been "shot", it was packaged and sent to the Chemist, who then sent it on to Kodak in England for processing. The processed film was then sent to Betty's in-laws in England.

In about the early '50s (I think) the small reels of film were taken by Betty's sister to London to be edited and combined onto bigger reels - Alas !  They were stolen from her car.

There is a list of (some of) the 16 mm cine films that she took – but obviously it has not been checked.  The films - about ten thousand feet - are within about six feet of where I am sitting.

LEGEND:-
"Gill" is her daughter, born in Johannesburg, June 1937;
"G." is her husband Gervas;
"Bet", also "B." is Betty, the “camera-man”;
"N" is her second son, Nigel (now in Queensland)
“C” is her youngest son, Crispin (now in Namibia)
(Her eldest son Robin seems not to appear in the films ! Perhaps he is on the missing Reel 8; and probably on Reel 9, for he was at Simamba and Kafue in 1956 – he was at school in England. And possibly Reel 19, for he joined the family in Barotseland for Christmas 1959)
