Success Smells Sweet

Following a pretty dismal season in the Angus League 3rd Division, we finally came up trumps with a exciting away victory against Carnoustie Bowling Club in the Angus Top Ten.
Fielding one of our strongest teams of the season we started the match pretty well, with all our rinks going into an early lead except the Fours, who were up against it for most of their game. The front end of the Carnoustie Four were just too strong and consistent on the night.
Score Carnoustie 2 Hope Paton 0
It was a different story in the singles however, with Dennis Machir having the better of the exchanges in the early stages. Looking fairly comfortable it looked like we would pick up two points from this game. His opponent however had other ideas, coming back to take a 16 - 15 lead. This was the spur that Dennis needed, and he in turn raised his game to run out a deserved 21 - 16 winner over the last few ends.
Score Carnoustie 2 Hope Paton 2
The triples was a different kettle of fish with the game being fairly close throughout, but Ron Blacklaws team looked like they would just edge it, going into the last end two shots up. The Carnoustie triple had other ideas, and a surprising four at the last end gave them a two shot victory.
Score Carnoustie 4 Hope Paton 2
Trailing by four points to two at this stage of the match, It was now all down to the Pairs to clinch the victory, if they could beat their opponents by more than eleven points.
With the green to themselves, the Hopey pair had a match winning team advantage of four shots with four ends to play. Taking the next two ends with singles, this increased to six with two ends to go.
Carnoustie took a two at the penultimate end, reducing the deficit to four again, and with a final drive at the last end, trying to somehow find a five to win, the opposing skip only managed to give another shot to the Hopey pairing which resulted in a five shot victory overall with both side on four points each.....
Final score Carnoustie 4 (61) Hope Paton 4 (66)
That five shot win sees us in the draw for next week at home against Carnoustie West End (Division 1). Should be a good crowd!
Well done lads!
