Forth secure semi-final spot after nail-biting match
23 May 2010

The unavailability of Forth's usual home pitch in Musselburgh meant that this home fixture was played across the Firth in Aberdour, on the pitch kindly made available by Aberdour shinty club.  The glorious weather proved rather hot for shintying but made for great post-match barbecuing!

Both teams were up for the challenge from the start and the battle seemed very evenly matched at the start.  Forth seemed to have a slight advantage with more scoring opportunities but were hard pressed to find tha back of the net.  Sophie and Maz kept feeding the ball up from the back line and Holly had some great shots on goal, despite feeling a bit under the weather.  Unfortunately for Forth luck went Lochaber's way shortly before the end of the first half when a shot rebounded past Polly into the goal.  Forth kept their heads up, however and finished the half strongly, even if they didn't net an equaliser.

At the start of the second half Forth took the game by the scruff of the neck with Sophie moving up to full forward and Úna replacing her at full back.  This instantly changed the course of the game in Forth's favour and the hard work of Maz and Úna in the back line meant Jen, Holly and Stacey had plenty of ball to send up the field.  It wasn't long before Sophie broke Forth's scoring drought with a sharp short range shot.  Stacey followed it up with another shot from the right of the goal.  Lochaber, however managed an equaliser, leaving Forth with the work to do all over again.  Sophie managed yet another goal to put Forth ahead.  However, a late free gave Lochaber another goal and sent the match into extra time.

Forth kept up their second half pace at the beginning of the first period of extra time but, again were unable to get a score.  At this stage the heat was beginning to take its toll on both teams and the Forth backs and goalie had to dig deep to keep Lochaber from scoring again.  After the switch the match seemed to be turning into an endurance contest with Forth coming out better some great running down the wings from Stacey and Jen meant there was planty of pressure coming down on the Lochaber goalie and backs.  Finally, in the last couple of minutes they broke and Sophie was able to flick an aerial shot into the net.

Final score: Forth 4 - Lochaber 3

Man of the match: Holly Webster
