Aberdour v Forth
09 May 2010

On a lovely sunny day beachside at Aberdour, the home team and Forth got off to a fairly even start; hangovers aside for the visitors.  A bit of last minute shuffling to accommodate ‘tiredness’ from the night before saw Una Henry step into Mickie’s empty goalie shoes and take command of the defensive effort from the back line.

Forth soon piled the pressure onto the young Aberdour team, inaccuracy being the only technical hitch to keep the score line at 0-0.  Katy Smith, heavily caffeinated and motivated by promises of post match BBQ delights soon got things under way with a long range effort which left the goalie standing (in the wrong place).  With 1 goal in the back of the net, Forth picked up the pace hungry for the next, but Aberdour matched pressure with pressure with some great clearances leading to attacking opportunities.  With Team: Una, Sophie, Verity on the case though- there was little to worry about.

Katy Smith did not hang around, with burgers a beckoning she soon slotted another goal past the Aberdour goalie.  However, this goalie was not giving up; a penalty attempt by said Smith was tipped over the bar, leaving the half time score at 2-0 and the young Fife team feeling hopeful for the second half.

Forth were well aware of the expected Aberdour second half fight back and took things into their own hands with the midfield linking well to piece together some impressive counter attacks.  A third goal soon arrived through an awesome solo effort by Niamh, lashing the netting at so tight an angle the rest of the team offered their condolences for a close miss.  Wrong- a brilliant goal!  With 3 under their belt Forth came into their own, with even the defence having a go.  Una venturing out of goals for the 2nd half to take some target practice (on Aberdour bodies instead of goals- but hey ho) and Sophie and Verity holding the fort for any sneaky offensive moves by a persistent home team midfield.

Even Durkin managed to find the goals after many far and wide attempts, a long range effort sneaking past the goalie.  Forth were on a roll by this stage and Holly Webster even felt it safe enough to brave the hangover and venture back onto the field to add support to some fine attacking efforts by Natalie and Gemma.  Katy Smith found the net once more to seal a hat trick in style, Niamh got a second and JD rounded things off with another exciting angled route to the right side of the side netting.  7 – 0 was the final score, a fine effort after a slowish start and the forwards were unlucky not to get a few more in the final minutes.

Special mention must go to; Rosie, the tiny Aberdour strong-hold in defence, new shinty idol of JD; the impressive array of BBQ culinary delights provided by team Sophie and Verity; Una’s cheffing attempts resulting in tasty silage burgers and burnt witches fingers sausages, and a great team effort on the multi sports frisbee/soccer/netball/basketball and gaelic football finale.  Good job team, bring on the quarter finals!!!
