Strathforth summertime 6s
26 July 2009

This year the StrathForth 6s were held in Edinburgh and the two leagues were contested by teams from all over Scotland.

Aberdour, Aberdeen University, Tir Connail Harps B and Strathglass played each other twice in the Development league. A young Aberdour side gave as good as they got and showed some solid defending and attacking play. Aberdeen University introduced some new players to the game, and familiarised them to the nuances of tackling and blocking. Tir Conaill Harps and Strathglass won through to the final with some determined play and great shooting.

Badenoch and Strathspey, Tir Conaill A, Forth A and B and GMA played in the hotly contested top league. After winning all their league matches GMA were clear through to the final. Their opponents were decided by the final league match of Forth A vs Forth B - a win by Forth A would put them through, whereas a Forth B victory would send Tir Conaill A to the final. The first goal was scored by Ruth Bordoli of Forth B which was answered by two quick goals from Katy Smith and Jo Gorniak to seal the game for Forth A.

Half-time of the tournament was enlivened by a Shinty Sports day competition, with over 30 participants eager to be crowned Sports Day champion. Events included the standard "Longest Hit" and "Longest Shy", in addition to a keepie-uppie race, a wheelbarrow race and a caber/caman toss! After points were counted there was found to be a 4-way tie for third place, so this was decided by a walk-off - hilariously clinched by Julie McWhirter of B&S. Second place in the competition was won by Yvonne Connachton of TCH with GMA's Laura McCafferty crowned overall winner.

In the Development final Lisa Larkin scored a hat-trick to give Strathglass the new tankard trophy. Kirsten Hughes of Strathglass was also awarded the development player of the tournament.

Forth A battled out the top league final against GMA, but couldn't keep out two great strikes from Katie Myerscough to put GMA's name on the trophy for the first time. GMA's Laura McCafferty was named the top league's player of the tournament.

Forth would like to thank referees Steven Dormer, Hamish Myers and Kevin McKell, assistant Danny McKell and our own star tournament organiser Mairi Lawson for an amazing day!
