Family Language and Heritage Groups

It's really an understatement to say that many languages are spoken in the UK today! Teachers are working with classes where children speak up to 15 languages or more.

The Caribbean and African Languages Network want to work with NATECLA, CiLT and the Institute of Linguists and others to explore establishing Family Language Groups, to empower parents to support their childrens language skills in home languages and English, by having a good understanding of the issues and advantages of bringing up children bilingually.

Using the successful models of Family Learning, parents/grandparents will have opportunities to research and explore their family heritage languages, the children will be encouraged to understand more about their family languages through story telling, drama, songs and rhymes to give them confidence to use or share their language skills in school, in the family and with friends. Together the parents / grandparents and children will share presentations, food and fun.
