The UK Biodiversity Action Plan

In 1994, in line with its commitment to promoting biodiversity under the Biodiversity Convention, the UK government published the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. This initiative set out Britain's biodiversity objectives and set up the UK Biodiversity Steering Group to lead the initiative. The steering group comprises representatives of all major bodies with an interest in land management, including ecologists, government agencies, conservation organizations, planners, industrialists and the farming community. The remit of the steering group was to identify those species and habitats of greatest conservation concern and to produce action plans aimed at halting or reversing the loss of these important species and habitats.

UK Biodiversity targets delivered through local Action

The UK Biodiversity Group realised at a very early stage that targets for the national biodiversity initiative could only be reached through widespread local action. This has resulted in a plethora of Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs) and the involvement of many people in the local community in trying to preserve the wildlife in their areas. The Scottish Biodiversity Group provides co-ordination between, as well as advice and support to, the twenty five or so LBAPs north of the border.

The Local Biodiversity Action Plan covering the local authority areas of Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde is one such contribution to the network of local initiatives.

These web pages have been developed by the Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire LBAP Partnership in order to publicise the LBAP locally and around the world. These pages contain information on the special plants animals and habitats we are seeking to conserve and the ways we are trying to to achieve this, through a partnership between different sectors of the local community.

Our aim is to stop or better still reverse the decline in fortunes of our local wildlife and the diversity of different habitats to be found in Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire and which are so important to our quality of life.
