The History of Harold and Alice Bridges Charity

The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity was established with funds donated by Harold Bridges and his wife in 1963. In June 1970 a grant of £100,000 was made to the Royal College of Surgeons to estabilsh a Fellowship, which still continues today. Further funds were added to the Charity following the sale of Bridges Transport Limited, the road haulage business which Harold had built up over the years. Harold was awarded am OBE in recognition of his charitable donations in 1974.

The Charity has made a large number of grants over the years to support a wide variety of charitable projects. The Harold Bridges Library at St Martin's College, Lancaster, was substantially funded by the Charity in 1974, but in recent years the emphasis has been on awarding smaller grants to a larger number of charitable causes, mainly in the Lancashire and surrounding areas. The total donations made from the Charity in the last fifteen years is almost £1.3 million.

All Saints Grange Bowling Club have received financial assistance from the Harold and Alice Charity on a number of occasions for which we are extremely grateful for their continued support.
