However prepared one might be, following in the footsteps of an
illustrious forebear can be less than straightforward. The 3rd Lord
Baden-Powell was a stalwart supporter of the Scouts all his life,
believing that by taking responsibility at an early age young people
benefited in adulthood. Yet the obligation to live up to his family
name also made, at times, for touchy relations with friends and
family alike.
Robert Baden-Powell bore a striking resemblance to his grandfather,
the 1st Lord Baden-Powell, whose founding of the Scouts dates back
to a camp held in 1907 on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour. Robert
was once persuaded to try on his namesake's dinner jacket, which is
