Despite the counter-attractions of the Mod, more than 40 people turned out at Caithness Horizons to hear Howie Firth give the first of a series of three talks on science and history for Highland Archaeology Fortnight. He described how the people of the Neolithic were not only astronomers and engineers but also plant-breeders, shaping the main crops that we still rely on today. Clues are emerging as to how they saw the world, and by bringing together a mix of approaches, from physics and chemistry to mythology and folklore, it is becoming possible to see how remarkable they were. The talk was hosted by Caithness Horizons and dedicated to an outstanding Caithness communicator and explorer of science, the late Dr Eric Voice. It generated wide-ranging discussion about the origins of science and concepts such as order and chaos.
