Grave in the aisle
In the aisle of the Church is a tombstone - the only one actually in the Church. This was covered by carpet for about 25 years, until the carpets were removed in 2020.
Thomas, born 1563, was 30 years older than his wife Susanna, born 1593 - old enough to be her father – she buried him, and had the tablet made, and she outlived him by 26 years.
Thomas, born 1563, was 70, and his wife Susanna, born 1593, was 40, when their son Joseph was born 1633.
The slab has room at the bottom for another inscription - did that couple have more children than just Joseph ?
Perhaps Thomas was married before, had other children, and his first wife died ? It is easy to forget that Death until the 1900s was a frequent visitor to the home.
Are Thomas & Susanna the forerunners of the Phillipses who owned the dairy ?
