Schiehallion in Wick

by Julia Robinson - 19:30 on 11 February 2009

A great night was had by all on Saturday in Wick. Shame we left early cos I hear it was brill...................

Went up in Kenny's car. My excuse for going was so I could sell some merchandise (cd's, polo shirts and baseball caps). The bonus - if you can call it that - was that I'd be sharing a room with the band - ooooohhh!!!!

As you can imagine the reality was less exciting.

First of all, the journey up was no bother. Clear roads, clear skies, not much traffic. Good trip! Arrived in plenty time to find hotel and get ready for sound check at 4pm. The Dangleberries were already there, having travelled up from Castle Douglas overnight and arriving at half 10 in the morning.

While the guys were getting acquainted with the 12 members of the Dangleberries, I was setting up my first ever merchandise stall.

When they'd finished we all set off for some food. By this time we were all starving. I'd not eaten all day and was almost fainting. Just as well I've got some extra layers of flab to keep me going!! Anyway, we ended up in the best Indian restaurant ever!! None of us could find fault with the curries. They were easily the best any of us had ever had. I'd go back any time and definitely recommend K2 to anyone who finds themselves in Wick.

The hall was full by the time we went back and I have to say, everyone seemed to enjoy the gig and Schiehallion sounded great! The Dangleberries came on and we settled back to enjoy the show.

Two sets in and Kenny's back in the door saying we had to go!! The snow had started and he was concerned that we wouldn't get back to Inverness for our Sunday afternoon gig in Finlay's. As it turned out, this was not the best idea he's ever had. Most of the journey home was taken in 2nd gear, at 20 miles an hour. The roads were covered in snow and at times, we couldn't see where we were going! We crawled down the Berriedale Braes and back up the other side at around 10mph in 1st gear at one point!! Luckily there was no-one else daft enough to be on the road so we had both lanes to play around on!!!!

When we reached Dornoch the snow disappeared and we drove the last 40 odd miles in less than half the time it took us to drive the first 60!! Next time (if there is one!) I'm taking the bus.............................
