Max gets freedom

A WELSH legend along with a comedian and a rugby chairman are to receive the Freedom of Neath Port Talbot.

Councillors have chosen Glynneath entertainer Max Boyce, Seven Sisters comedian Colin Price and Aberavon RFC chairman Andrew Vaughan John, to be in line to receive the prestigious honour.

Boyce was nominated for his charitable work in the county and in Wales.

Price was chosen because of his services in the county borough to charitable causes. Mr Vaughan Jones was nominated for his services to the county borough for rugby football and the business community.

Glynneath councillor Del Morgan said he was very pleased that Max Boyce who is very much a "likeable character" will be honoured.

He said: "A lot of people know he had a very difficult start in life as he lost his father underground.

"Max went on to be taught Welsh education at Cwmnedd and was a miner."

He added: "He is a local hero. He is a comedian, musician, poet and more."He is a boy with his feet and heart in Wales."

Seven Sisters councillor Steve Hunt said he wanted to endorse the three nominations.He said: "All in their own rights they deserve this prestigious award."

Mr Hunt said Colin Price is a "character larger than life". He said: "He is a person who again does not forget his roots."He is a fantastic ambassador for Neath Port Talbot just like Max and Andrew."

The motion was proposed by deputy leader Peter Rees, and seconded by cabinet member, Taibach councillor, John Rogers.In 2011 Skewen singing superstar Bonnie Tyler was awarded the Freedom of Neath Port Talbot.

In 2008, Hollywood actor Michael Sheen was given the freedom of Neath Port Talbot along with tireless volunteer Margaret Thorne, who was also given the honour.

Former chief executive Ken Sawyers was given the honour in 2010.
