Windsor Road Post Office going?

Big discussion in Neath Ferret over Windsor Road Post Office

Cllr Andrew Jenkins writes:

"I can give you the following information regarding the Crown Post Office on Windsor Road.

Post Office Ltd are currently engaged in a programme of renewal for their branches across the country, due to massive losses. According to the PO, they are running annual losses of around £40 million, with much of the losses coming from their Crown network.

Crown Post Offices, like the one on Windsor Road, are directly owned and managed by the Post Office. The proposal put on the table by the Post Office is that they'll seek to franchise out the Neath and Port Talbot crown offices, placing them with a retail partner with - according to them - no loss of service or jobs."

A Crown Post Office has been in Neath since Victorian times.   It was built near the GWR Neath General Railway station to take advantage of rail traffic when it was possible to post a letter to London in the morning for it to arrive at the capital the same day!

The building, pictured right, is now now an empty shell but is still owned by the Post Office.

Heritage Scene Neath were privileged to be shown around the building last year to see the potential of it being used as a heritage centre for many of Neath treasures which are currently locked away for safe keeping.
