In Scotland, annual Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) eye screening is offered to everyone with Diabetes over the age of 12.
DR can occur when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels at the back of the eye. DR is a major cause of sight loss in Scotland so it is important to get your eyes screened annually. There are often no symptoms until the disease is well under way.
Screening is something your GP can arrange - or speak to your Optometrist to find out more.
One way to minimise the risk of DR is to keep good control of your Diabetes and your blood sugar levels. Everyone with Diabetes knows to cut down on sugar - but sugar is in so many foods, not just sweets and biscuits.
