CPD group meeting 26th Jan 2012

5.15-7.00 on Thursday 26/01/12 in 1WN 3.15
Do bring along any writings/ideas/books/articles/video that you'd like to share. I'll bring along the video-camera in case anyone wants a video of their values, intentions and evaluations.

Last Thursday Pete Mellett outlined his values and intentions for a construction management course and the 10:54 minute video is on youtube at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsoAihSzgaI .

Maureen sends her apologies for this Thursday's session, but hopes to let Mark have some copies of the special issue of the Journal of Co-operative Studies. The publicity for the special includes includes:
"This special issue marks the start of a journey to harness and combine the energy, knowledge, experience and practice. We invite you to immerse yourself in the diverse range of articles, to start discussions and discourses and to grasp the challenge of taking the debates and actions further. Together we could truly embrace the potential of transforming education through co-operation and become a force for change. Make sure that there is a space reserved on your bookshelf for this essential text."
In her Guest Editorial Maureen includes the following point about values:

"I find the suite of six organisational values (self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity) and the four ethical values (honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others), can be interpreted readily from an educational perspective. They provide a language to explore my motives and actions and scaffold my reflection."

We could see if any of these values are ones that are informing our own enquiries.

Do make a point of checking the CPD blog, responding to the contributions of the group and posting any thoughts or writings of your own. Any difficulties and Marie will go through the process of Thursday. Tracey has added to the blog and you could test out your facility with using the site by responding to contributions from Tracey and perhaps the earlier contributions from Ed, Sonia and Shelagh.

Don't forget the let Marie know if you can come to the Living Legacy session on the 2nd February at the Fry Conference Centre. It would be good if you could circulate the information to any colleagues you think might be interested:

Creating a Living Educational Legacy  - An Inaugural Event

Fry Conference Centre, Keynsham, BS31 2AU
            Thursday 2nd Feb. 2012, 8.45am – 1.30pm

A unique opportunity to:

  • Experience cooperative learning employing Open Space Technology and World Cafe techniques which you can use in your own context
  • Enrich your networks and working relationships with professionals with diverse experiences
  • Share your passion for education productively to improve the educational experience of children and young people

Since its inception in 1997 APEX has promoted educational learning of each and all to develop and offer cooperatively, talents, expertise and knowledge as gifts. Creative and diverse educational relationships, space and opportunities have been developed in the process. At this inaugural event we will begin to develop a living educational legacy so these can be extended and build upon for the future after APEX ends August 2012.

Our conversations will focus on developing productive responses to questions such as:

  • What is important to each of us and how can we work cooperatively to develop and offer our community’s talents, expertise and knowledge as gifts
  • What needs to happen to enable the work of APEX in its fullest sense to be built on as a living legacy?
  • Who would be prepared to do/contribute what?
  • What next?

A living educational legacy might comprise, for instance: trans-generational projects; cross-phase tutoring; passion-led learning opportunities; researching communities; collaborative narratives; innovative artefacts; interdisciplinary events; creative space; reflective relationships… YOUR IMAGINED POSSIBILITIES

All practitioners are invited whatever their affiliations e.g. Head teachers, teachers and other school-based educators and governors, Heritage Services, Sports Partnership, Museums, artists, scientists, mathematicians, writers, dancers, HE, FE, Business… I do hope you will join us. Your presence is needed to make this an inspirational, productive and co-creative opportunity. This event is not exclusive so please spread the invitation to contacts in and beyond B&NES.

Please reply ASAP to apex@bathnes.gov.uk with your details so that we can make adequate arrangements and provide sufficient refreshments and lunch. There is no charge.

If you would like further details or to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me. Looking forward to seeing you
