Who we are

We are in the process of developing an organic gardening project on an area of previously unused land within the Dartmoor Zoological Park site in Sparkwell, Devon.

We hope to benefit a range of people at risk of social exclusion and isolation, with a special focus on young people at risk of becomng engaged within the criminal justice system.

We also hope to provide participants with learning opportunities in growing and producing healthy food, nursery stock production and amenity gardening. Other benefits to include gaining confidence and self-esteem and social skills from teamwork.

Progress

July 2012

Grow 4 Good has welcomed the first volunteers on site and, despite the rain, they came back for more (which is fantastic)!! A brilliant, very chunky wooden platform has been installed, ready to hold the water tanks which will collect water from the roof of the sheds and feed it down to the polytunnels. Everyone's wanting the tanks up there quick because surely only then will it stop raining!! The volunteers have been busy preparing the ground in the polytunnels and removing plenty of rocks before a good mulching of manure. The windows are now in the potting shed and the next step is to build a bench and propagating shelf in there. Keep up the great work! 

June 2012

The project is really coming on now.  We've got new volunteers on board and more in the pipeline, which is great. We also have electricity and water on site (Hurray!). Shelving has been installed in the polytunnels, and one of the polytunnels has now been dug over ready for planting. Next on the list is to put some windows in the potting shed so that we can get shelving in there, and by the end of the month we should have the ground prepared for our 1000 litre water tanks.

December 2011

The group have worked very hard over the last few months to clear the site of brambles, weeds and rubbish, and design the layout of the site. They have recently hired a digger which has done a tremendous job at levelling the site, ready for two polytunnels.

The group hopes to be able to secure funding to refurbish the buildings that are on site, as well as secure an electricity supply, and erect the polytunnels.
