About the Project

We are part of Ottery St Mary's Transition Initiative and are working to develop a couple of small projects that hopefully will act as a catalyst to encourage more people to get involved in growing their own food.  They are currently working on a fruit and nut tree planting and HogCO are organising a wild food forage day for us in July (2010).

We aim to:

  • Educate people to use and benefit from sustainable and locally produced food;
  • Increase provision of growing spaces in Ottery St Mary and encourage the local community to grow and share their own food;
  • Ensure that all the people in the community have access to food growing opportunities;
  • Work with schools and other organisations to revive and keep alive traditional skills in the preparation of food;
  • Support our local food producers and local food retailers;
  • Work with the land owners to free up land to grow food for the benefit of the community.

There's also an advert for budding growers in search of land:

'Unused Garden Plot in Ottery St.Mary'
There is a garden not being used in the centre of Ottery which the owner feels would make a good vegetable plot for someone. He is keen to see it being used so if you think you might be interested then please contact us at
info@sustainableottery.org.uk and we will pass your details on to the owner. Please mark the e-mail ‘Garden plot’. Thanks. If you have a large garden that you are unable to maintain and would like someone else to use it then please let us know plus of course if you would like to garden but do not have any ground then let us know too and we will endeavour to put interested parties together.

August 2010  The Food Forage was brilliant, thanks to HogCO for supporting it and making it happen. We had 20 foragers, a lovely morning, quite a lot of stuff to collect and everyone said how much they enjoyed it. We had a good meal back in town after the event with the greenery we had collected and a few rabbit casseroles. We really want to do another one, or two!
