BEATING THE BACKGROUND BLUES

Befuddled by backgrounds? Too often they are treated as an irrelevance or avoided through indecision. This workshop investigates the important role of the background in a painting, whether it’s to enhance the subject, direct the viewer’s attention or create a sense of perspective. We will experiment with different techniques to give participants confidence in creating backgrounds to suit a range of needs. Ideally for users of acrylics, please contact the tutor if you wish to use other media.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

Come and learn how to make Christmas Decorations using Resin. We will be using moulds to produce flat decora-tions. They will be decorated in a range of materials like paper, sequins, glitter, mesh etc. A small charge will be made for materials used.

Unfortunately, the resin will not be set on the day, so your decorations will be sent on to you or they can be collected from the Gloucestershire Arts and Craft Centre in Gloucester.

Tutor

Katherine Ford has always enjoyed being creative, loves dressmaking, knitting and various other crafts. She stumbled across resin about 10 years and likes the unpredictability about it. You cannot guarantee exactly what the piece will look like when it's finished. She also makes and sell hats, fascinators, tiaras and hair accessories.

ENCAUSTIC WAX ART

This is a fascinating method of creating instant pictures using coloured wax and an iron. Students will be shown sev-eral techniques to get started, and then we will work on abstracts, landscapes, seascapes, fantasy castles – the possi-bilities are endless, as well as using the heated stylus to create more detail. Encaustic art is fabulous for beginners and for those who do not consider themselves 'artistic' because the results are instant and the pictures vibrant. I will dem-onstrate and show you how to use this fantastic medium and you will produce several wax paintings which are yours to keep. By the end of the day you will be able to uthe tools se of encaustic wax painting to produce your own work. All tools will be provided with a charge £5 to cover materials.
