Enthusiasm about Plaza

Save the Plaza Group

An enthusiastic group of residents met at Taibach Workingmen's Club on Tuesday, 17th May 2011, to discuss the future of the Port Talbot Plaza Cinema, which now belongs to Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.

Present at the meeting were several councillors and reporters from the South Wales Evening Post.   Mr Alex Jones, former owner/manager of the Plaza spoke of the condition of the building and said it was structurally very sound.

All those present agreed that the building would be ideal for a multi-cultural arts and crafts centre.   One resident that it would be a tribute to those who have contributed to dramatic arts, including, Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins - the latter having had close connections with the Plaza in his younger days.

After waiting to see the development plans for the area, it was decided to call another meeting in a few weeks time.

Arising from this there may be some interest to develop the Empire Cinema in Neath, which is thought to be in an even better condition.
