1.  Step 3 Lockdown Easements

Step 3 Lockdown easements have been issued by our governing body, the BCGBA earlier this week.  Your EBC Committee have reviewed this document and associated guidance issued by the Cabinet Office; our implementation (from Monday 17th May) will be as follows:

a)  to increase the maximum number of Jacks permitted on the green at any one time from 3 to 4

b)  to increase the maximum number of bowlers on the green at any one time from 6 to 16

c)  to permit any format of play providing 1 and 2 are followed and adequate social distancing is maintained

d)  to continue using the green booking system

Please ensure all those on the green are identified - this is for NHS Test and Trace purposes in addition to managing the numbers on the green.

Note:  there is plenty of availability for social bowling outside the peak times of 1pm to 4pm and even more availability at weekends.  If you wish to only bowl when there are fewer people on the green, feel free to put your name against more than one 'Jack' on the booking system to prevent others from using the green, but please only do this outside of the peak times above.

e)  to continue to use the clubhouse for access to equipment and toilets only

The government guidance for hospitality venues still requires seated table service and separation of those preparing refreshments and those serving.  This is felt to be too onerous for EBC to implement and as the Barlow Reading Room Cafe is open for the majority of the day, it is not deemed essential.  Visiting teams for league matches have been advised to bring their own refreshments.

f)  to remind Members that the maximum number of people permitted to mix socially around the green is now 30; please do not exceed this and maintain adequate social distancing at all times.  Please use the NHS Covid-19 App to 'Check In' to the bowling club via the QR Codes displayed on the clubhouse.  This is in support of the NHS Test & Trace programme.

2.  Formal Club Competitions

We have decided to postpone organising formal club competitions during 'Step 3'.  However, any member wishing to organise their own informal competitions may do so provided that all the requirements at point 1 above are met.

All the above will be reviewed again when Step 4 Guidance is released (no earlier than June 21st), or if we are advised to due to the current rise in Covid-19 cases in the Bolton and Blackburn with Darwen areas.

3.  Match Fees

The match fees for organised league matches will remain at £1 per game, payable to your team captain prior to play.  Also be reminded that you must have paid for 2021 membership subscription prior to playing your first match plus have been registered with the relevant League Secretary.

4. Coaching

This will continue to be provided on a pre-booked basis.  Please contact Margaret or Peter to arrange coaching sessions.   Details can be found on the website under the Coaching tab.

Happy Bowling,

Matches to be held at Edgworth Bowling Club

Please inform players in all leagues that will bowl at Edgworth BC this season.

Please be advised that we will not be serving refreshments from our clubhouse.  Please bring your own drinks etc.  The clubhouse is open only for access to equipment and toilets.

We have portable handwashing and hand sanitising stations available for use during matches, which will be positioned outside the clubhouse for your safety and well-being, to encourage their use without the need to enter the clubhouse.  We also have eight certified Match Jacks available so if anyone would rather play with a Jack that is not handled by their opponent, this can be arranged.

Note also that the car park at the rear of The Barlow is currently closed as it is deemed a construction site.  You will need to park elsewhere or on Bolton Road.  New double yellow lines have been added either side of the car park entrance and on the other side of the road at the Moorfield estate entrance, so please be aware of these and comply with the new restrictions.  You may wish to arrive 5 minutes earlier than normal due to the parking disruption.  Limited pre-arranged access to the site is available to those who are unable to manage the three steps from the road entrance to the club.  Please advise beforehand if access is required.

Expect the parking restrictions to be in place until the end of July.

Condition of the green:

The bowling green is currently undergoing some remedial work to address the surface water retention problem seen at the end of the last season and over winter.

This is a problem we had 10 years ago and was resolved by more frequent aeration and three applications of a specialist enzyme based soil conditioner. The first course of treatment took place mid April.

We have also had to rope off a section of the green where the problem is at its most severe and to re-seed a couple of bare patches.

Additional drainage was put in during October, plus all the gulley drains cleaned and checked for flow, by a small army of volunteers.

We are continuing to closely monitor the condition of the green in preparation for competitive league matches to start mid May.
