Church Services Explained Holy Communion Common Worship What is It? It is an hour long service at which we celebrate Holy Communion by sharing bread and wine. We follow the modern words in this service and all responses during the service are spoken. There are songs and the music is provided by guitars; the organ or sometimes recorded backing tracks. The song words are generally on a projected screen, and you will be given a service booklet at the door. In between the songs there will be readings from the Bible; prayers and a talk of 10-15 minutes. Most attendees will then go up to the front, where the priest will give everyone a piece of bread, or a wafer, and a sip of wine. You are welcome to stay in your pew if you want to. If you want to go forward for a blessing, just take a book in your hands and bow your head as the priest approaches. If you have mobility difficulties the priest can come to you. There is sometimes a collection when a bag will be passed along each pew. No one will mind at all if you just pass it on. If there is no collection bag, there will be a plate by the door should you want to make a donation. As the numbers are generally around 25, we sit in the pews wherever we feel comfortable. There is normally tea and coffee served at the end of the service if you want to stay and chat. When is it? This service is currently at 10am on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. It will rotate around all our 6 of our churches. Holy Communion Book of Common Prayer What is It? This is a short service lasting about 30 minutes with no singing at which we celebrate Holy Communion by sharing bread and wine. We follow the traditional words from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. There will be readings from the Bible, prayers and a short (5-10miuteses) talk. Then most attendees will go to the front, where the priest gives out a piece of bread or a wafer and a sip of wine. As the numbers are generally under 15, we often sit it the choir stalls or the front few pews. You are welcome to sit anywhere that you feel comfortable, and you do not need to go to the front unless you want to. If you want to go up just for a blessing and not take the bread and wine, simply take a book in your hands and bow your head as the priest approaches. If you have mobility difficulties the priest will come to you. There is no collection, just a plate by the door should you want to make a donation. When is it? This is currently at 8am on the 3rd Sunday of each month. It rotates around Badgworth, Biddisham, Compton Bishop, Christon and Loxton. Click HERE to find out when and where the next one will be. Agape Meal What is It? It is a simple service with no singing at which we remember the last supper which Jesus shared with his disciples before he died. We follow a simple sheet, have a reading from the Bible, say prayers and there is a very short talk. We then share a piece of bread around the circle. As the numbers are generally under 15, we sit around a table, rather than in the pews. Although this could sound very intimate there is no pressure to say anything and if you wanted to sit outside the circle and just listen, no one will be bothered. It usually lasts about 30 minutes. There is no collection, just a plate at the door should you want to make a donation. When is it?
