His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps "into the City", and although he did try, his heart was not in it.  After five years, he joined the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.  He has made many very good wildlife films, principally about birds.

He was married at 28 on 24 September 1966 in Newton, Cambs to Liz (Flo) Hurrell, aged 22.  They have two children :-

“Liz” or "Flo" (Elizabeth) Hurrell.

Liz was born on 28 April 1943 in Newton, Cambs, She was sometimes known as Flo to avoid confusion with her sister-in-law Elizabeth Stedall nee Clay, see above.  Liz was the ??? daughter of ??? Hurrell and ??? nee ??? of ???.

Liz adopted the name "Flo" to avoid confusion with her sister-in-law Elizabeth, Tone's younger sister, also known as Liz.

Liz died in Addenbrooke’s on 18th August 2013 after falling from a ladder at home whilst pruning her recalcitrant wisteria – trying to get it to flower next year.  We believe that she would have known almost nothing about the accident and suffered no pain. She was 70.

She was cremated in Cambridge at 12:00 on Friday 30th August, and there was a Thanksgiving Service in the Church at Longstowe at 12:00 on 6th September 2013, at which the Revd. Nigel H.A. Pearson gave an Address. and her son Charlie Clay followed with his own Tribute.
