(Arthur John) Mackenzie Clay was born on 14 September 1928 in Baghdad, the son of Arundel Clay and Margaret née Buist. 

He was educated at Aberdeen University. 

He was married on 25 September 1954 in the Scots Kirk, Adelaide, to Margaret (Cathro) Smart (Stuart?); they had a son and three daughters:-

Morag A.        was born on 26 April 1958 in Northampton.  She was married on 31 March 1985 in Bungendore to Chris Lokan, who was born on 15 October 1957.

Fraser J.        (twin) was born on 12 January 1960 in Northampton

Fiona Jane     (twin) was born on 12 January 1960 in Northampton.

Mackenzie was a forester.

He died in 2003 in Merimbula, New South Wales.
