Weekly News ending 23rd July

On Sunday afternoon the gents went to Airdrie Central for their first game in this year's Airdrie League Knock-out Fours competition and once again prevailed after a closely fought contest, winning by 2 games to 1.

Note that the County semi-final of the Top Six tournament has paired us against Carluke. This game will be played on Thursday evening at Dalzell BC. Should we win we will play the Final at Newarthill on Thursday 4th August.

Just a short reminder to all members that the club are hosting a "Try Bowls" / Open Day at the club on Saturday afternoon. Members are asked to help by making yourselves available to assist the committee in whichever way you can and also to gift donations for a "Tombolla" stall. Contact Jean Little or Jim McAllister.

The Fair Shield got underway on Tuesday evening but some of the games have had to be re-scheduled due to the gents team having arranged to play a Laney Triples game against Gartcosh this evening. The two triples playing at home both lost by a margin of 6 shots but we progress to the next round because our two travelling teams won by a total of 22 shots at Gartcosh. Our next opponents (to be played by 4th August) are Garrowhill.

Thursday: The Lanarkshire leagues were published on-line tonight and they show very interesting results. In Div 4 we are joint top with 14 points but our shots difference is only third best (but only by 8 shots). However there are only 4 points between the 1st and 7th club so there is everything to play for. In Div 14 we are in joint 2nd place but with a superior shots advantage which puts us in clear 2nd place although Overtown are 6 points clear of us at the top. There are only 3 more games to play before the final positions can be determined.

Also on Thursday our "Top 6" team went to Dalzell club in Motherwell to play the semi-final against Carluke. There were two very good wins and a draw which takes us to the County Final on 4th August where we will face Eddlewood.

On Saturday the "Try Bowls/Open Day" was a great success. Droves of our members' families and friends and a great many who came along in response to our leaflets had a fun time. The day was a great success thanks in particular to those members who had spent a great deal of time and effort producing and donating "goodies" for our various stalls as well as those who donated their time to man the stalls and assist the youngsters and others who wished to "Try Bowls" for the first, but hopefully not the last time. Laura Kerr the Bowls Scotland Regional Development Officer and local councillor David Fagan were also in attendance and their continued and ongoing support and guidance is very much appreciated. Our thanks also go to the editor of the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser for his help in bringing this event to the notice of the members of the public. Well Done to everyone.
