Weekly News ending 25th June

On Monday the Seniors League team were at Airdrie Central for the first game in the reverse fixtures, but the home club could only manage to put out one rink. With 2 points in the bag before the start of play our rink played a steady game and won their game giving us 4 points.

At night the club Div 1 team played host to a strong Victoria 2 team in the last game of the league season with the visitors looking to avenge the 7-0 beating we gave their No 1 team in the last game.  One of the games gave us an easy two points but the other two games were much closer. In the end we had to settle on one win each with a game drawn but we did manage to finish the season with a 4 - 3 victory and a top two finish. It is doubtful if this is sufficient to claim the title this year as Central only need to match our points tally in their final game against Coatdyke. Our Div 2 team travel to Calderbank on Wednesday evening as league leaders but with three games to play there can be no slacking in our efforts if we want a league victory.

On Tuesday evening, Ian Chisholm, Dave McIntyre & John McHutchison took their place in the semi finals of the County Championships at Hamilton Caledonian, but unfortunately they could not progress to the Finals. Meanwhile, our ladies played host to Calderbank in their Airdrie League fixture but the more experienced visitors took full points even although the scores were fairly close.

Wednesday: Early reports suggest that Airdrie Central may have failed in their effort to gain four points in their final game in Division 1 of the Airdrie & Coatbridge leagues at Coatdyke played on Tuesday evening. If this is confirmed it will mean that we have reclaimed the title.

Our Div 2 team went to Calderbank to try and improve their position at the top of the league in this week's rearranged game but we came up against a very strong home team who pulled out all the stops and gave us a good beating. We managed only 1 point with a hard fought draw on one rink.  The league secretary has awarded  Glengowan 18 shots to nil conceded and also awarded them with 6 points and an extra point for an overall score because Gartsherrie could not complete their fixture. Surely awarding this additional point can not be right. If the decision is not overturned it means that Glengowan go to the top of the league over us by 1 point. I trust that this will give an added spur to our lads when we meet the new league leaders in the last game of the season at home, but first we have a tricky away game to play against Whifflet. It is still in our own hands - go to it boys.

This evening (Thursday) was the start of our campaign to win the Top 6 tournament and we started off successfully with a 3-0 win over Springwells.

Friday night saw the start of the 2016 Lanark Leagues campaigns and both of our teams were away from home. Division 4 travelled to Chryston & District BC where they had a hard game but gained 2 of the 6 points available. Meanwhile, Division 14 went to Uddingston and secured a 4-2 points victory.

On Saturday we had our now bi-annual visit from Newmilns Bowling Club and by all accounts everyone had an excellent day. Renewing friendships was the winner today, which is just as well as the visitors retained the trophy after some enjoyable bowling. The visit only lasted approx 7 hours but the memories of an excellent day will last until it is our turn to travel south next year.
