Flowerdale Falls and Stac Pollaidh. 14/06/14

Just two of us went on this weekend to the west coast, me and Marie. We stayed in Ullapool at the Caledonian Hotel. It looked good on the internet when we booked it, but it had a tired feel and was still stuck in the seventies.

On the Saturday morning we set off for Gairloch. The weather was not promising with thick fog and showers of rain, but it improved as we got nearer our destination. The sun had broken through and it was quite warm  as we started the walk at Gairloch harbour. I was using an AA card description of the walk. I was starting to doubt when it had last been updated as a lot of the way marks given in it were no longer there. We got to the falls and I took a few pictures but they did not capture how spectacular the waterfall was.

The next day was warm dry and sunny, so I suggested to Marie that we try Stac Pollaidh. This craggy hill lies north west of Ullapool on the road to Achiltibuie and is 613 metres high. As we slogged up the steep path to the top I started to regret the big breakfast of sausage, egg, bacon and black pudding I had scoffed that morning at the hotel.

The top gradually came into sight and it was good to see fine views of the Wester Ross area. While sitting there we got speaking to another couple. The woman told us that she had wanted to reach the top again just before she turned eighty! It was really inspiring.

We then headed back down meeting lots of people making their way up this popular mountain.
