Noctilucent Clouds and Aurora Combined Display

Early August sees the noctilucent cloud viewing season coming to an end and the return of darker nights in Caithness. This can present the opportunity for two natural phenomena visible to the naked eye - noctilucent clouds and aurora - to make an appearance on the northern horizon at the same time.

These natural sights can be mesmerising and the fantastic timelapse footage below by CAG member Maciej Winiarczyk clearly shows how beautiful they are to watch.........

This became Astronomy Photo of the Day on the 19th August - congratulations Maciej!

Here's another APoD photo by a CAG member - lunar crepuscular rays by Stewart Watt.
